Day 22 - Travel to Yellowstone, WY

Day 22's Pictures

This morning we got up early and went to Wal-Mart to stock up on supplies (we should just hand Wal-Mart our paychecks ). They didn't have any American flags either! After fueling up we were on the road for Yellowstone. We stopped in Butte, MT to eat lunch. Kaley, of course, had bits of everybody's lunch after eating hers! Then we got lost again. We were supposed to have taken highway 191 which was supposed to have connected with highway 85. Well, we took the exit the software told us to and ended up in the middle of "Cornville, USA" on some back road. Eventually we wound up on highway 84 and that took us to Bozeman, MT and we successfully found the 191. It was a nice 1/2 hour diversion though.

The trip down highway 191 towards Yellowstone was a very nice one. John was fearing the worse when he saw the mountains we were going through, but people were smart and built the road along side a river that traversed through the mountains. So the road was not very windy and very gently sloped for the most part. The scenery was gorgeous. Along the way we stopped at a turn-out and got into our swimming shoes.

Samuel and John went and waded in the river next to the road. Boy the water was cold! Samuel was shivering by the time we got out and only his feet were in the water! After that we continued down the highway and found our way to the KOA.

At the KOA we took a nice swim and hot tub to relax and had doctored-up frozen pizza for dinner. This KOA was a pit though. There is no cable hookup and the only modem hookup had horrible line conditions so it took the modem forever to sync up. Plus, it was a standing platform--no chair--so John had to stand while he typed and checked e-mail. It was amazing how lame a lot of the modem hookups in these RV parks were!

That night before bed, Kaley watched her mama put some lotion on. Then she grabbed the tube and pretended to squeeze it and rub lotion on herself! What a smart girl!

Day 23 - Visit Yellowstone, travel to Logan, UT

Day 23's Pictures

After the usual morning breakfast ritual we went to Yellowstone National Park for about 4-5 hours. We saw the paint pots (boiling lime scale) and all sorts of geysers, hot springs, steam vents, etc. A bison walked across the road and we almost hit it! We also saw elk right off the road. We didn't see any bears though. We finally made our way to Old Faithful and had poor timing there. We ended up waiting out in the cold for almost an hour and 20 minutes before it erupted. But, we got some really good pictures of everything.

It was sort of sad looking around because everywhere you looked there was forest land which had burned down within the last 10 years. Lots of old dead trees were sticking up everywhere as a reminder. But, give it 20 years and it'll look great again because there were already many little trees pushing their way up through the brush.

We drove out of there down to Logan, UT through some country roads, but they were not windy so that was good. We went through the largest patch of gnats that we'd ever seen! We literally had to scrape the bugs off the windshield before we could see out of it! They grow 'em good up in Utah !

We got into the RV park very late at night so we didn't get to see much in Logan that night.

Day 24 - Explore Logan, UT, travel to Salt Lake City, UT

Day 24's Pictures

After we dealt with Samuel being sick in the morning we went out and about in search of cool things in Logan. Many of John's ancestors are from the Logan area so tracking them down in the Logan Cemetery was on the agenda. Now that it was light we saw the spires of the Logan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We worked our way along the streets until we found it and parked in the auxiliary lot. We got a lot of really good pictures of grounds and the Temple; it's a really pretty one. Then we worked our way over towards the cemetery. We got lost, and continued into "Cache Canyon Highway" which we took for about 15 minutes looking at the gorgeous trees turning red and yellow. We took a few pictures and headed back and found the cemetery. After some very unsuccessful attempts at getting the RV parked, we finally got into the bloody cemetery and managed to park it in an inconspicuous location near the back. After a lot of manual searching we went to the office to get some help in looking up the grave site of Peter Maughan. Peter Maughan was John's great-great-great grandfather who helped settle Cache Valley and the Logan area. We had seen pictures of the monument placed on his grave site, but it was really cool seeing it in person. We saw a few other Maughan graves and took pictures of everything and then we headed out to eat.

To help Samuel feel better from being sick we told him we would get his new favorite food--McDonald's cheese burgers and fries!!! After lunch we headed out towards Salt Lake City, UT.

Jennifer found a much better location, a KOA, about 2 miles from the Salt Lake Temple so we stayed there. We hit the pool and then dinner. After that Jennifer did the laundry and John did some maintenance on the RV. Finally we cooked some more cookies in the oven, but John got the 'cheap' kind and they were pretty bad--always buy the good cookies when on the road! Kaley liked them. But then again, Kaley likes everything!
